I'm going to give this a try....

Because I enjoy reading other people's blogs so much, I decided I would attempt joining the blogging world. And even though it's already the middle of November, I would like to join in the exercise of saying what you are thankful for each day for the rest of the month.

There are so very many things I am thankful for, but I am going to start with my dear friend Kim. This time last year I was coming home crying every single day, not knowing how I was going to make it through the end of the week, much less to Thanksgiving Break, and ultimately the end of the school year. My first year teaching was definately unforgettable, but not in the way you might hope. Luckily, I had a wonderful team teacher who was an angel in helping me make it through the year. I now have an amazing job where I look forward to going to work each day, and have a wonderful team of teachers; however, I do miss one thing about last year and that is Kim. I miss our crazy butts getting to work everyday at 6:30. I miss sharing all of her pregnancy cravings! But mostly, I just miss being able to go next door and chat with her about what was going in our lives!

Side note...

CMA awards are a big disappointment! What is happening to country music!!

Kid's say the darndest things....

On Monday one of my precious little girls walked in the door and said..."Mrs. English my weekend was horrible!!! I had diarrhea twice and threw up!"

Technology and Education

Technology in the Classroom

Students today spend an immense amount of time using technology outside of school. Whether it is through playing video games, text messaging, myspace, or facebook (just to name a few), kids are constantly interacting with technology. For this reason, I think it is extremely important to incorporate technology in the classroom to keep students engaged in learning. Teachers can incorporate technology in many ways. The assignments that we have had this semester have taught us how to use programs that many of us use everyday, in different ways. Knowing how to create different types of powerpoints, photostories, and graphic organizers are valuable resources for teachers to have.

Pros and Cons

One main concern with using computers in the classroom, is that they will take the emotion out of the classroom. Teachers need to consider students' emotional needs during instruction. Some people are afraid using computers will take away teacher support. On the flipside of this, may people say computers are an excellent way to provide extra support for struggling students. Teacher's do not have time to spend with individual students who need extra help, however, computers can act as tutors for these students.

Blogs and Wikis

This class has been my first experience with a wiki space. I have found it somewhat confusing and not as easy to navigate as other webspaces I have seen. However, this may just be due to my lack of exposure. Blogs are an excellent way to get students interacting with one another. Teachers can create online discussions between classmates about content they are learning. Also, teachers could have students set up their own blog as a way to reflect on what they are learning.
